Why word counts differ between tools
A "word" is usually defined as a sequence of characters separated by whitespace. That simple rule breaks down with hyphenated terms, numbers, URLs and emoji. Most word processors count "state-of-the-art" as one word, while some counters treat each hyphenated part separately. When a strict limit matters, check which rule your target platform uses before trusting a single number.
Common limits worth memorising
- SEO title tag: aim for roughly 50–60 characters so it is not truncated in search results.
- Meta description: around 150–160 characters is the safe zone for most desktop snippets.
- Academic essays: usually counted in words and often allow a 10% margin either side of the target.
- Social bios: LinkedIn headline is 220 characters; most bios sit between 150 and 300.
- SMS: a single message is 160 characters before it splits into multiple parts.
Writing to a target without padding
When you are short of a word count, resist the urge to pad with filler. Instead, add a concrete example, a short counter-argument, or a sentence that explains the "so what" of a claim. When you are over, cut adverbs, collapse repeated ideas, and replace long phrases like "in order to" with "to".
